History

The town itself has many ancient buildings, including the castle which dates from the 12th century and the 15th century Priory Barn. Possibly the best way to explore Taunton is to follow the Taunton Heritage Trail, a gentle self guided walk that takes in these and many other historic sites.

The area offers a wide range of places to eat and drink, from traditional inns to restaurants offering many different types of cuisine.

Walking

The surrounding countryside is accessible to all, with walks suitable for people of all abilities. According to a report by Macmillan Cancer Support and the Ramblers, the health benefits of regular walking include saving almost 37,000 lives every year and reducing the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by nearly 300,000. The walks include a stroll along the Bridgewater and Taunton canal and many circular walks. More energetic walkers may like to tackle a walk in the nearby Quantock hills. Cyclists and horse riders will also find plenty of routes by which to explore the area.

Outdoors

There are a number of nature reserves and parks in the area for those who enjoy the open air, and sporting venues include Taunton Racecourse and the Somerset Cricket Ground.

Attractions

Local attractions include arts centres, museums and sporting venues. If you are planning on organising an event, there are different options of venue hire in Taunton. Everything from weddings to music concerts can be accommodated, so it is worth checking out options such as County Ground Venue Hire in Taunton.

Heritage

Railway enthusiasts will not want to miss a trip on the West Somerset Railway. This is the longest heritage line in Britain and starts at Bishops Lydeard, just 4 miles from Taunton. It takes visitors on a scenic journey over the Quantocks to the coast at Minehead, and tickets are available at the Taunton Visitor Centre.

Whatever your interests, you will find plenty of activities in and around Taunton this summer.
